Well, I fell off the blogging radar for a bit there, but I discovered it is actually really hard to get anything done with a birthday party to organise, cakes to make and an extra 5 people squidged into the house for a week. But the kids loved sleeping marae style in the lounge with their cousins.
Mr Eight-year-old made the transition to Mr Nine-year-old with a medieval themed party, so naturally he wanted an appropriate cake...
As with any self-respecting medieval themed party we had kings and fair maidens packing swords. There was even a wizard. There was feasting and sword fighting a plenty, but unfortunately we didn't have enough space to do jousting, there would have been a bit too much tree dodging necessary. Shame.
Guests are gone, party is over, life is back to normal...sigh.

Vanda - Sounds like your son had a lovely birthday party and you are quite a cake-baker!! Looks great! The things parents do...
Your wonderful cake brought back memories. I made a very similar gingerbread castle for my, now, 14 year old's 5th birthday. He still mentions it from time to time. I'm sure your creation will make a lasting impression too.
The cake is awesome and the party sounds like such fun, if harrying for the parents!
What a cool castle! If I made one like that it would probably collapse. Sounds like you all had fun.
Love the cake, I bet it went down a treat. Great to here the kids got in to the party theme, it's not a real medieval party without a good sword of two. ;)
I was having conniptions about the cake three hours before the party as the temperature was so warm the icing wouldn't set properly! It all worked out in the end, and I can tell you a group of eight and nine year-olds does more damage on a castle than a trebuchet ever could!!!
10/10 for cake decorating Vanda
I am really happy that my children are so old they think it is more important that their mother can write crime than that she can´t bake a decent cake :D
Fabulous, of course!
